The Millennium Bridge cost £22m, curves gracefully across the water and tilts to let vessels pass.

It leads directly to the entrance of the Baltic, the £46m centre for contemporary art created from a former flour mill.

Next door is the Sage, a new 1,650- seat concert hall and music school.
